A 3-day Monterey itinerary is a three-night plan that groups the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Cannery Row on Day 1, Point Lobos and Carmel-by-the-Sea on Day 2, and 17-Mile Drive plus whale watching on Day 3. Stay in Monterey or Pacific Grove, reserve Aquarium admission and the whale-watching tour first, and rent a car for the coastal drives.
The Big Sur guidance below reflects conditions reported on September 20, 2026. Check road and park notices again before driving south.
3-Day Monterey Itinerary at a Glance
| Day | Main Area | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Monterey and Pacific Grove | Monterey Bay Aquarium, Cannery Row, coastal trail and Lovers Point |
| Day 2 | Carmel coast | Point Lobos, Carmel-by-the-Sea and 17-Mile Drive |
| Day 3 | Monterey Bay | Morning whale-watching tour, Fisherman's Wharf and Old Monterey |
| Optional swap | Big Sur | Replace Day 3 only after checking Highway 1 and park conditions |
Day 1: Monterey Bay Aquarium, Cannery Row and Pacific Grove
Morning: Visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium
Start at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, located at 886 Cannery Row. Allow three to four hours if you want to see the Kelp Forest, Open Sea, sea otters, touch pools and feeding presentations. The Aquarium recommends buying admission in advance, and opening hours vary by date.
A workable schedule is:
- 9:30 or 10:00 a.m.: Enter the Aquarium
- 10:30 to 11:00 a.m.: Attend a feeding or presentation
- 12:30 p.m.: Have lunch inside the Aquarium or on Cannery Row
- 1:30 p.m.: Finish the exhibits and browse Cannery Row
The Monterey Bay Aquarium does not have public parking on site. Use a nearby garage, surface lot or street parking.
Afternoon: Walk Cannery Row and the Coast
Cannery Row is the former sardine-canning district. Today, it has restaurants, shops, galleries and ocean viewpoints.
From Cannery Row, follow the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail toward Pacific Grove. You do not need to walk the full route. The section toward Lovers Point Park offers coastal views without adding another major stop to the day.
When it is operating, Monterey's free trolley connects downtown, Fisherman's Wharf and Cannery Row.
Evening: Watch the Sunset in Pacific Grove
Finish at Lovers Point or Asilomar State Beach. After several hours at the Aquarium, a coastal walk is a better fit than adding another indoor attraction.
Keep whale watching for another day. Each activity takes several hours, and separating them makes the schedule easier to manage.
Day 2: Point Lobos, Carmel-by-the-Sea and 17-Mile Drive
Morning: Visit Point Lobos State Natural Reserve
Arrive at Point Lobos State Natural Reserve near opening time. The reserve opens at 8:00 a.m., closes at 7:00 p.m., and allows final entry at 6:30 p.m. The current vehicle day-use fee is $10.
Parking is limited to approximately 150 vehicles. Point Lobos says visitors have a better chance of entering before about 9:30 a.m. or later in the afternoon, after some visitors leave.
Spend two to three hours on a few trails instead of trying to cover the entire reserve. Priorities include:
- Cypress Grove Trail: Coastal views and Monterey cypress trees
- Sea Lion Point: Ocean and wildlife viewing
- Whalers Cabin and Whalers Cove: Local cultural and maritime history
Stay on marked trails and away from cliff edges and wildlife. Dogs are not allowed inside Point Lobos, except for qualifying service animals.
Afternoon: Explore Carmel-by-the-Sea
Drive to Carmel-by-the-Sea for lunch and an afternoon on foot. The compact downtown area around Ocean Avenue has boutiques, galleries, cafés and distinctive cottages.
Allow about two hours for:
- Lunch downtown
- Walking along Ocean Avenue
- Visiting a few galleries or shops
- Driving to Carmel Beach for a short walk
Carmel-by-the-Sea works best as a walking and dining stop. You do not need to treat it as a checklist of individual attractions.
Late Afternoon: Drive 17-Mile Drive
Enter 17-Mile Drive through one of the public gates and follow the coastal route through Pebble Beach. The gates are open from sunrise to sunset. Day visitors currently pay $12.50 per vehicle. Pebble Beach Resorts reimburses the fee with a qualifying purchase at its restaurants, excluding Pebble Beach Market.
Prioritize these stops:
- Spanish Bay
- Point Joe
- Bird Rock
- Cypress Point Lookout
- Lone Cypress
- Crocker Grove, if time allows
You do not need to stop at every viewpoint. Plan on two to three hours, depending on parking, photographs and short walks.
Have dinner in Carmel, Pacific Grove or Old Monterey.
Day 3: Whale Watching and Historic Monterey
Morning: Take a Whale-Watching Tour
Book a morning departure. Monterey Bay Whale Watch lists morning trips lasting approximately 3.5 to four hours, with shorter afternoon departures available on some dates. The operator recommends the longer morning trip because it provides more time on the water and more opportunities to encounter marine life.
A typical schedule is:
- 8:15 a.m.: Arrive for check-in
- 9:00 a.m.: Depart
- 1:00 p.m.: Return and have lunch
- 2:30 p.m.: Explore Fisherman's Wharf or Old Monterey
- 4:30 p.m.: Visit a historic site, browse downtown or return to the coast
- Evening: Have a final seafood dinner or take a sunset walk
Book the tour after confirming your accommodation and before filling in the rest of the itinerary. Departures depend on the date, and weather or ocean conditions can affect operations.
Afternoon: Choose One Low-Pressure Activity
After the boat trip, choose one nearby activity:
- Fisherman's Wharf: Seafood restaurants, harbor views and boat operators
- Old Monterey: Historic buildings, restaurants and the Monterey State Historic Park area
- Pacific Grove: A quieter coastal walk and more ocean viewpoints
- Cannery Row: Shopping, photographs or a visit to the Aquarium Store
Keep the afternoon open. Whale-watching trips can be tiring, and return times may vary.
Should You Include Big Sur in a 3-Day Monterey Itinerary?
Do not make Big Sur the centerpiece of the itinerary unless Highway 1 and the relevant state parks are open on your travel dates.
As of September 20, 2026, California State Parks reports that Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park is closed because of the Timber Fire. Other Big Sur areas have limited reopening or restrictions. Caltrans also reports that a southern Highway 1 closure remains in place for emergency operations.
Check the official Caltrans road-conditions map and California State Parks notices immediately before driving south.
If Big Sur is fully accessible, replace Day 3 with a dedicated drive. Do not combine a full Big Sur excursion with a morning whale-watching tour.
Where Should You Stay for Three Days in Monterey?
Monterey or Pacific Grove is the most practical base for most first-time visitors. Both areas reduce driving on Day 1 and keep the Aquarium, Cannery Row, Pacific Grove and whale-watching departures within easy reach.
| Area | Best For | Main Trade-Off |
|---|---|---|
| Cannery Row | First-time visitors and Aquarium access | More tourist-oriented and often busier |
| Pacific Grove | Coastal scenery, quieter evenings and access to 17-Mile Drive | Fewer large attractions within walking distance |
| Old Monterey | Restaurants, history and central access | Less immediate access to the Aquarium |
| Carmel-by-the-Sea | Romantic atmosphere, galleries and dining | More driving to Monterey attractions |
What Should You Book First?
Book or confirm these items in this order:
- Accommodation, preferably in Monterey or Pacific Grove
- Monterey Bay Aquarium admission, since hours vary and advance tickets are recommended
- Morning whale-watching tour, especially for weekends, holidays or summer travel
- Rental car, unless you plan to remain in Monterey and skip Point Lobos and 17-Mile Drive
- Restaurant reservations for Carmel and popular waterfront restaurants
- Road and park checks, particularly if you plan to drive toward Big Sur
